Algeria: The race is on
After revelling in its monopoly status for almost four decades, Sonelgaz's domination of Algeria's power generation drew to a close in January. The move is not before time. Local electricity demand is set to rise by 5 per cent a year over the next decade, and local officials estimate that some $12,000 million will have to be invested in upgrading and expanding capacity to meet the new requirements. This is not a sum that Sonelgaz would be able to muster easily on its own.
