Abu Dhabi impounds cars with worn out tyres
Colonel Ahmed Al Shehi, Director of Capital Traffic Department at the Abu Dhabi Police, said the department impounded 61 vehicles - 40 of them state-owned - for one week, and fined their owners Dhs200 ($54) each for driving vehicles with worn-out or unfit tyres last week. The Ministry of Interior is preparing to launch a new nationwide awareness campaign on the dangers of using bald or unfit tyres on roads. -

Air Arabia gets early delivery
UAE-based Air Arabia has gotten approval from Airbus for an earlier delivery date for the first 44 A320 aircraft, from 2012 to the middle of next year. The carrier ordered 34 A320s in 2007 and 10 more in November of last year. Adel Ali, the group chief executive of the airline, told The National that it 'makes sense to receive early delivery instead of leasing aircraft to fill the operational gaps'. -

Air Arabia launches service to Athens
Air Arabia, the largest low-cost carrier in the Middle East, today launched non-stop service to the Greek city of Athens from the carrier's main hub in Sharjah, UAE. UAE-based low-cost carrier Air Arabia said it has been recognized by Airbus for the fourth consecutive year for achieving the highest level of operational utilization in the world, placing the carrier at the lead among all global airlines operating Airbus A320 aircraft. Al Ain gets aerodrome certification
Al Ain International Airport has been awarded the Aerodrome certificate from the General Civil Aviation Authority following a successful aircraft crash simulation exercise, and an airport safety oversight audit last month. The airport is the second in the UAE, after Abu Dhabi International Airport, to be awarded full certification, according to the Abu Dhabi Airports Company. -
Al Ain rail network blueprint unveiled
Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) has announced the Plan Al Ain 2030, which features a layered public transport network for Al Ain with a high-speed rail link to Abu Dhabi and Dubai and a surface tram and bus network to connect key areas of the city, in addition to the creation of five new major roads leading to the Central Business District of Al Ain. Egypt's Al Ezz Steel Rebars (Ezzsteel) has reported a net profit of EGP1.2bn in 2008, up by 9% from 2007. American Airlines to test in-flight Wi-fi

Apple posts 15% profit increase
Apple has posted a Q2 profit increase of 15%, fuelled by sales of its iPhone and iPod products, although sales of its Mac computers fell slightly. Net profits for the three months to March 28 increased to $1.21bn, from $1.05bn the year before, with revenues up by nearly 9% to $8.16bn. Steve jobs is expected to return to the group in June. -

Jordan-based Arab Wings is launching a sister company, 'Gulf Wings', in the UAE emirate of Sharjah. The new Bahrain Gateway container terminal at Khalifa Bin Salman Port marked its opening with its first call by a container ship, the 2,500-TEU APL Dalian. The migration of operations from the old terminal of Mina Salman to the new terminal started April 1. The old terminal will cease operations as a commercial port on May 1. -

Boeing Q1 profits fall 50%
Boeing has announced that Q1 earnings fell by 50%, short of analyst forecasts. CEO Jim McNerney told analysts that during the first quarter, carriers asked for later delivery dates for about 60 aircraft that were due to roll off the group's assembly lines. Net income was $610m, down from the year-ago quarter's $1.21bn. -
Boeing to improve 737-800 jets
Boeing said the 2011 model 737-800 jets will be roomier and have improved engine performance and reduced drag, gaining 2% in fuel. FedEx confirms 1,000 job cuts
FedEx Corporation spokesman Jesse Bunn has confirmed that the company has axed 1,000 jobs of 'salaried exempt' professionals and managers worldwide, including 500 in its US-based headquarters. Hyundai orders down by 85%
Hyundai Heavy Industries Co, the world's largest shipbuilder, said orders in the first two months of this year fell 85% due to the financial crisis. Jazeera may hedge 25% Q2 fuel
Andrew Cowen, Jazeera airways' newly appointed CEO, told Emirates Business 24/7 that the airline has 25% of fuel hedging requirement in the second quarter of this year, and is currently looking to put a hedging strategy in place now that oil prices seem to be stabilising. Jet Airways adds new routes to Saudi
India's Jet Airways said today it is launching daily flights from Riyadh and Jeddah to Mumbai, which will start operating on June 14. These cities will be Jet Airways' seventh and eighth destinations respectively, and Boeing 737-800 aircraft will be used on the routes. Jet Airways currently flies daily to Kuwait, Bahrain, Muscat, Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi from several Indian cities. -

Dr Vijay Mallya, chairman of United Breweries Group, owner of Kingfisher Airlines, told the Gulf Daily News that the carrier would fly to Bahrain 'if there is enough economic justification,' otherwise, the company would wait until 'the economy gets better'. Kuwait's biggest construction materials firm, National Industries Group Holding, an affiliate of the family-owned Kharafi Group, said it posted a loss of KD281.96 million ($966.4m) in 2008 and planned to pay no dividend. Losses per share in 2008 were 224 fils compared with a profit of 167 fils per share in 2007. The company gave no explanation for the loss. -
New Egypt airline to launch this year
AlMasria Universal Airlines has announced plans to start Egypt's first private commercial airline this year, Reuters has reported. Under the terms of the contract Zamil CoolCare will provide supervisory commissioning services for the conveying, fire fighting and suppression, plumbing, HVAC, building management, electrical, communications, utility metering, solar and life support systems.
