The award in December, of an estimated $20bn contract to a South Korean-led consortium to design and build nuclear power stations in Abu Dhabi is the culmination of three decades of hard work by South Korean companies in the region. From being a very minor player 30 years ago, Korea is today one of the region’s main providers of consumer goods and engineering services.
Strengthening ties: South Korea and the Middle East
Given the prominence today of South Korean companies such as Samsung Engineering, Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Daewoo Engineering & Construction in the Middle East, it seems unbelievable that just 10 years ago, the country’s contractors were struggling to establish any sort of foothold in the region.
