Orascom Construction to triple fabricated steel capacity

Egypt's Orascom Construction Industries is set to triple its steel fabrication capacity by developing a new steel plant next to the port of Sokhna, in the Gulf of Suez.

Developing the 80,000 tonne a year plant is expected to cost $82m. Construction is scheduled to be complete later this year. Orascom's subsidiary, National Steel Fabrication, is overseeing the project.

The facility will cover an area of 500,000 square metres in an industrial area managed by another Orascom subsidiary, the Suez Industrial Development Company.

The government is developing a special economic zone next to Sokhna port in the northwest of the Gulf of Suez as part of efforts to attract foreign investment to Egypt.

The General Authority for Economic Zone Northwest Gulf of Suez (Sezone) is responsible for the zone and has recently invited expressions of interest from parties to develop a further 20.4 square kilometres of land adjacent to the port (MEED 26:02:08).
