Etihad Rail is inviting companies to submit prequalification documents in December for six contracts on stage two of the $11bn national railway.

The main works for stage two will be done by four railway design and build infrastructure contracts. It will cover civil works, structures, track works, facilities and utilities. Companies are asked to submit prequalification documents by 13 December.

The second contract covers railway integration and systems. The successful contractor will be responsible for the design, procurement, manufacturing, installation and systems integrations. This also includes testing and commissioning management. Prequalification documents must be submitted by 14 December.

The third contract covers the supply of all switches and crossings for stage two. Companies must submit prequalification documents by 12 December.

Stage two will involve extending the railway line for 137 kilometres from Ruwais to Ghweifat. It also involves a 190km extension from Liwa Junction to Al Ain and an 186km extension from Al Ain to Jebel Ali. This will also include a branch to Khalifa Port. Stage two also includes building a 78km line from Industrial City Abu Dhabi to Mussafah.

The extensions will include the construction of depots, freight facilities, marshalling years and passenger stations which will be built at a later date.

Work on stage two will start in 2012 and be ready in 2016.

The civil and tracks contract for the first phase was awarded to a consortium led by Italy’s Saipem in October (MEED 26:10:11).

The first phase of the railway involves building a 265-kilometre track between the port of Ruwais and gas fields at Shah and Habshan. The first part of the work will involve building the line from Ruwais to Habshan, which will be able to transport 10,000 tonnes a day (t/d) of granulated sulphur. This will increase to 20,000 t/d when the line is completed to Shah.
