  • $20k fee for tour companies

    Tour companies wishing to bring tourists into the UAE will have to pay a one-off fee of Dh75,000 ($20,424) for a licence to do so, according to a Gulf News report. The company will then need to pay an additional deposit of Dh1,000 ($272)per tourist, which will be refundable once the visitor leaves the country. This is part of a visa fee overhaul announced by the UAE authorities which will come into force on 1 August.

  • Airlines face losses as fuel prices mount

    IATA director-general Giovanni Bisignani said the global airline industry will incur losses of $6.1bn if oil stays at $135 for the rest of the year, reported Gulf News. Even at a consensus estimate of $107 a barrel, the airline industry faces a fuel bill of $176bn, $40bn more than in 2007, he noted. This would see the industry making a loss of $2.3bn in 2008. The industry registered a net profit of $5.6bn in 2007.

  • Al Rushaid, Zeeco to build OEM facility

    Al Rushaid Group and Zeeco has formed a joint venture to build an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) facility for Flare Technologies. The technology will utilize Saudi Aramco's patented High Pressure Air Assist System, HPAAS. The facility will have two units, a combustion related equipment manufacturing, test and repair facility and R&D facility. The project cost is approximately $30m.
  • ALAFCO sells 8 Dreamliners to KSA

    Kuwait's Aviation Lease and Finance Co (ALAFCO) is to sell Saudi Arabian Airlines eight Boeing Dreamliner B787-9 aircraft for $1.6bn, reported AP. Delivery of the planes will occur in 2014 and 2015 when AlAFCO receives the planes from the manufacturer. Saudi Airlines has also agreed to lease four planes of the same type for 12 years starting from 2012, and five Airbus A320-200 for eight years starting next year. The total cost of the lease contracts is $1.125bn at list prices.

    Kuwait's Aviation Lease and Finance Company (Alafco) has announced plans to sell eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft to Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) in a deal worth $1.6bn.

    Emirates SkyCargo and Schenker AG have doubled capacity between Dubai and Ohio via Frankfurt-Hahn with the addition of another weekly Boeing 747-400F service. The move is a response to increased demand for intercontinental shipping and will add a further 120 tonne capacity in each direction.
  • Emirates unveils A380 date

    Emirates Airlines has announced that its brand new A380 will fly direct to New York's JFK airport on 1 August on its inaugural commercial service. The flight will also be the first commercial run by an A380 to the Americas. After the first flights the A380 will service one of the carriers regular twice-daily runs. Emirates is expecting delivery of the first of its 58 ordered A380s on 28 July.

  • UAE to ban old cars from roads

    The UAE will no longer allow vehicles older than 20 years on its roads from January, reported Khaleej Times. A senior official at the Ministry of Interior said licences for cars manufactured before 1988 would not be renewed, while the import of cars manufactured five years earlier would be banned. The licences of cars manufactured 15 years ago would also not be renewed from January 2010, he added.
