to take a larger share of the global airline market will see it increase its airport’s capacity from 7 million passengers a year to more than 40 million a year.

Cargo handling capacity will also increase to 2.5 million tonnes a year. The most expensive element of the project is the $6.8bn Midfield Terminal.

Malaysian budget airline, AirAsia X has chosen Abu Dhabi airport to be its regional hub for refuelling and connecting flights to possible destinations in Europe, Africa and central Asia, as a part of its expansion plans. In October the airline will begin flights between Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur, with tickets sales Available from later this month.

Abu Dhabi Airports Company has completed a second new runway and a third terminal at Abu Dhabi's International Airport. The new facilities are part of the Dhs25bn airport expansion plan designed to increase the overall capacity to more than 20 million passengers per year. A second new Air Traffic Control is underway as well as the Midfield Terminal Complex.
