Project Overview
The plans of Saudi Arabian Mining Company
(Maaden) for an integrated aluminium mine-to-metal project is one of the largest vertically integrated schemes of its kind in the world.
Operations feature a power plant, a 90-million-tonne bauxite reserve in Al-Zabirah in the north of the country, an alumina refinery with a capacity of 1.6 million tonnes a year (t/y), and an aluminium smelter with a 720,000 t/y capacity.
The bauxite mined at Al-Zabirah will be transported by rail to Ras al-Zour, where the alumina plant, smelter and power generation facilities will be located.
Project Analysis
MINING: From the mine to the metal
When the Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) was formed in late 1997 to develop the kingdom's vast mineral resources, the move was considered to be a major step towards greater economic diversification. The government's vision was to establish Maaden as a third pillar beside the country's corporate giants, Saudi Aramco and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic).
