The destruction of both the demand and supply sides of most industries caused by the Covid-19 lockdowns has placed companies in all sectors under severe financial stress.
In most cases, however, the stress was already there. The Covid-19 crisis has simply heightened and exposed underlying problems to the point where taking painful measures to address difficult issues can no longer be avoided. Nowhere is this more apparent than in aviation.
The June 2020 issue of MEED Business Review offers an in-depth look at the outlook for the region's aviation sector. Regional carriers such as Emirates and Etihad face a slow and turbulent post-pandemic recovery. Although tentative steps are being taken to get passenger flights back into the sky, airlines and airports can expect the impact of the Covid-19 ‘black swan’ event to last for at least 18 months.
Consolidation opportunities could be revisited by Gulf carriers as the region’s aviation sector encounters post-pandemic financial uncertainty.
The outlook for upcoming airport projects is also now unclear – although the good news is airport construction projects that are already on site and at the execution stage are still proceeding.

This month's exclusive 18-page Market Focus offers a comprehensive look at Iraq, where the country's newly appointed prime minister must navigate through not only the Covid-19 crisis, but also the results of decades of poor decision-making.
