Rabat eyes overhaul of healthcare and investment sectors as Covid-19 tally grows in Mena

The number of Covid-19 cases in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region crossed 2,298,507 on 15 October, according to Worldometers data collated by MEED.

Countries in the GCC comprise 38.2 per cent (876,898) of all regional cases, while Iran accounts for 22.3 per cent (513,219) of the 2.29 million cases.

Iran has reported 414,831 recoveries and 29,349 deaths due to Covid-19 to date.

On 14 October, local media reported that the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (Echo) programme has allocated $9.4m to help Iran manage and control the pandemic.

The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) will spend the Echo funding to procure diagnosis and treatment equipment for local government entities to use. Unicef has also made separate donations of sanitisers, hand gels and soaps to support vulnerable children in 31 cities across six provinces.

Countries in the wider Mena region comprise 39.5 per cent (907,390) of all 2.29 million infections.

Morocco, for instance, has confirmed 160,333 cases of Covid-19 to date, with 133,959 recoveries and 2,726 deaths.

Yesterday, Morocco's Minister of Economy, Finance and Administrative Reform, Mohamed Benchaaboun, said Covid-19 had forced the Moroccan government to review its priorities and weaknesses.

He added that the government would launch a healthcare programme on 1 January 2021 to expand compulsory health insurance for 22 million Moroccans in two years.

Separately, Benchaaboun added that Rabat has allocated 11 per cent of its GDP to revive the economy, of which 7 per cent will be earmarked for state guarantees, and the rest for the newly formed Mohammed VI Investment Fund.

The fund will not intervene directly in economic sectors, however, and will lean on banks to encourage public-private partnerships in Morocco.
