The north-south mineral railway line to Raz al-Zour on the Gulf coast has been fully-commissioned and will begin commercial operations soon, Saudi Railway Company (SAR) civil and track work manager Bashar Almalik told the MEED/SCE Saudi Arabian EPC Projects 2011 Conference.

“The line was commissioned last week,” Almalik said. “Commercial operations involving one train taking phosphates to Ras al-Zour will begin in months.”

The north-south mineral railway line will comprise the construction of 2,400 kilometres of track. The final phase of the project, which entails building a line to Riyadh international airport, is due to be completed in 2013. SAR was created in May 2006 to build and operate the north-south railway line. It is owned by the Ministry of Finance.
