Algiers begins minerals sale
Algiers is set to introduce the first private participation into its mining sector with the imminent sale of two subsidiaries of state mining company Entreprise Nationale des Produits Miniers Non-Ferreux et des Substances Utiles (Enof).
Canada's AntOro has been selected to take a 70 per cent stake in state bentonite company Societe des Bentonites d'Algerie (Bental) following the submission in 2005 of commercial bids by AntOro and Taures, also of Canada. An award is expected by the end of November.
AntOro will commit to maintain the company's two existing plants at Mzila near Mostaganem and Hammam Boughrara near Maghnia and develop new facilities on the two sites. Mzila produces 17,000 tonnes a year (t/y) of bentonite and Hammam Boughrara produces 13,000 t/y of bentonite and 3,000 t/y of bleaching clay. The products are used for drilling mud, foundry casting, fertilisers and pesticides, edible oil purification, and the manufacture of putty and lubricants.
Two companies have also been shortlisted to take a stake in state kaolin company Societe des Kaolins d'Algerie (Soalka) following the submission in 2005 of bids by eight companies. An award is expected by early 2007. Soalka produces 60,000 t/y of kaolins from two mines, at El-Milia, near Jijel and Debbagh, near Guelma. It also operates a treatment plant at El-Milia with capacity of 50,000 t/y. The product is used for the paper, ceramics, insecticides, plastics and rubber industries.
The award of the two contracts is under review by the government's privatisation council, Conseil des Participations de l'Etat (CPE-MEED 13:10:06).
