Maaden seeks Ras al-Zour port bids
Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) has invited about 12 contractors to submit bids by mid-December to design and build a multi-million dollar port to serve Ras al-Zour industrial zone in the Eastern Province.
The facility will initially be built to import bauxite, process chemicals and other equipment required for the company's proposed aluminium smelter (MEED 15:9:06).
Bidders are likely to include Geneva-registered Archirodon Construction (Overseas) , Van Oord Gulf and Royal Boskalis Westminster , both of the Netherlands, Dredging International and Jan de Nul , both of Belgium, the local Huta , China Harbour Engineering, Japan's Penta-Ocean Construction and South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company .
The scope of works comprises the dredging of a channel to a depth of 15 metres, as well as the port basin. The berthing facilities will be able to handle vessels of up to 70,000 dwt. A separate operator will be selected to manage the port. Worley Arabia is the consultant.
