Italy's Prysmian Cables & Systems has been awarded a contract to supply 6,300 kilometres of fibre optic cabling for a telecommunications network covering the north and west, including Tripoli.

The system will form the backbone of a nationwide telecommunications network being built by Libyan Post, Telecommunication and Information Company (LPTIC). The northwest network is being installed by Italian contractor Sirti and is due to be completed within 18 months. In October, Sirti and France's Alcatel were awarded the two main construction contracts to install the networks (MEED 27:10:06).
