Local/UK joint venture plans oil shale extraction
Jordan Energy & Mining (JEM), a local/UK joint venture, plans to produce shale oil and a low-grade fuel for electric power generation from surface oil shale deposits in the Al-Lajoun block, in the west.
JEM will complete a conceptual study in March into the commercial viability of extracting the deposits. 'From April to June, we hope to finalise a concession agreement with the government,' says Chris Morgan, chairman of JEM.
The full feasibility study, which began in November 2006, will take 20 months to complete. JEM will use a retorting process to extract the shale oil from the deposits which could be used in the kingdom's sole crude oil refinery at Zarqa, in the east.
The UK office of the US' UOP is working on technology to refine shale oil for potential use in the 25,000-barrel-a-day-(b/d)- refinery, whose capacity is planned to be upgraded to 130,000 b/d. Two other companies have also signed memorandums of understanding for oil shale extraction in the Al-Lajoun block (MEED 17:11:06).
