Mitsui aims for involvement in Sipchem phase

Japan's Mitsui & Company and Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem) are understood to be preparing a memorandum of understanding to pave theway for Mitsui to take an equity stake in Sipchem's planned third phase Jubail petrochemicals complex.

Under the terms of the new agreement, due to be signed soon, Mitsui will take a stake in the ethylene cracker and the polyolefins unit at the worldscale complex, including the polypropylene and high-density polyethylene plants.

Mitsui, with the UK's Lucite and the US' DuPont, was a co-signatory with Sipchem for the complex's ethane/propane feedstock allocation. The three international firms are also the main technology providers for the project (MEED 24:11:06).

The tender for the contract to build the cracker is due tobe issued to the five members of the ethylene club by the endof May, with tenders for the other process units issued later in the year.
