Ganope names operators on delayed bidding round

The delayed block awards from the 2006 international bidding round of Ganoub el-Wadi Petroleum Company (Ganope) have been completed.

Awards have been made on five of the eight blocks offered in the round; three attracted no bids. The awards were originally expected in November. However, only the award for block 6 was announced at that time (MEED 10:11:06).

Like the most recent EGAS awards, this round is notable for the absence of established, large oil companies. However, this is not surprising considering the less established reputation of Ganope's acreage.

'For Ganope to have awarded five of these frontier blocks is certainly a good result for them,' says Ross Millan of research consultant Melrose Resources.

The awards include operators new to Egypt (see box). It is a first venture into the country for both Petrocorp International and United Oil Company, and is Gujarat State Petroleum Company's second.

Observers are still waiting for the delayed awards for Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC) from its 2006 international bid round. Due in January, an EGPC official says it has made its own award shortlist and is waiting on approval from the Petroleum Ministry.
