The giant Ras Tanura refinery upgrade and integrated petrochemicals complex will contain a power element, according to its project director.

'The complex will have a WSPP [water, steam and power project],' says Fayez al-Sharef, director of the Ras Tanura refinery upgrade and petrochemicals project for Saudi Aramco.

'We have not decided if it will be part of the joint venture [of the US' Dow Chemical Company] or separate.'

The final configuration is far from being determined, but the WSPP is likely to be similar to the power element contained in the Rabigh Refining & Petrochemical Company (Petro-Rabigh) complex. On that project, the WSPP was developed on a private basis.

Details of the WSPP's capacity will be decided as part of the front-end engineering and design contract, due to be awarded soon
