Societe Tunisienne de l'Electricite & du Gaz (Steg) is planning a 400-MW combined-cycle power plant at Bizerte, in the northeast. Tenders will be launched by the beginning of 2008 and the plant is due to be commissioned in 2012.

The Birzete plant will be a copy of a complex at Ghannouch. Steg is currently evaluating technical bids for the Ghannouch project. France's Alstom Power, Italy's Ansaldo Energia, a team of Germany's Siemens with Canada's SNC Lavalin, and a consortium of GE Energy of the US with Italy's Techint have submitted offers. The utility says it will request commercial bids by July (MEED 22:12:06).

Steg has also requested technical bids for the project to build three wind farms in the Bizerte area. The deadline for submitting offers is 28 June.

The projects, which will be carried out on a build-operate-transfer basis, will have a combined capacity of 100-120 MW (MEED 4:8:06).
