Oman's Galfar Engineering & Contracting has won the 18-month contract to carry out the seawater facilities expansion project planned by Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer).

Under the estimated AED 240 million ($65.4 million) contract, Galfar will supply and install eight new seawater pumps, five distribution headers and seawater discharge manifolds. The work also includes the modification and revamp of 12 existing pumps.

The scheme aims to meet a large increase in demand for seawater cooling, which is projected to reach 5.1 million cubic metres a day (cm/d) by 2009, from the current 1.3 million cm/d.

The expansion will serve several new industrial projects planned in the Ruwais area. The US' Foster Wheeler is the front-end engineering and design contractor. Tebodin of the Netherlands is the project management consultant (MEED 17:11:07).
