Aldar awards tallest tower
The local/Lebanese Arabian Construction Company (ACC) has been awarded the AED 2,700 million ($736 million) contract to build three towers on the redevelopment of Abu Dhabi's central market.
The contract is understood to be the largest single building contract awarded in Abu Dhabi to date, and will involve the construction of an 88-storey residential tower, which, at 382 metres, will be the tallest on Abu Dhabi island.
It will also include a 55-storey, five-star hotel with 279 rooms; a 58-storey office building; and a 16-storey, four-star hotel building with 212 rooms.
Aldar Properties had tried to award the towers along with the car park, souk and retail podium as one main contract but negotiations with the joint venture of South Korea's Samsung Corporation, Japan's Taisei Corporation and the local Arabtec Construction broke down in February because the joint venture's proposal did not meet the developer's budgetary requirements (see Briefing, page 8).
The plans for the project also involve a mosque and landscaping works. The estimated gross internal floor area of the entire scheme is 680,000 square metres. An award for the development's retail podium is expected in October.
Kuwait's Mushrif Trading & Contracting is working on the raft and car park packages after completing the piling and excavation packages in a joint venture with the local Middle East Foundations. The UK's Foster & Partners is the design consultant, while fellow UK company EC Harris is acting as the project manager (MEED 29:6:07).
