Local real estate developer Nakheel has received bids from at least two companies for the contract to build the Trump International Hotel & Tower on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

The bidders are the local/South African joint venture of Al-Habtoor Engineering Enterprises and Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East) and the local/Australian Nasa Multiplex.

The tower will be a 48-floor mixed-use development with

a 300-room hotel and

360 apartments.

It will have a viewing gallery and five-star restaurants at its highest point. Further public areas and lobbies will be located throughout the property to provide additional viewing points. The new design for the hotel is more angular than the earlier tulip-shaped scheme. It will

form an archway straddling the Palm monorail.

The tower was originally expected to be built across a canal that was to have run along the trunk of the island.

However, the plans were actually changed when Nakheel decided to replace the canal with a park development.

Australia's Bovis Lend Lease is the project manager for the development. The UK's Atkins is the consultant.

Nakheel is developing the hotel in a joint venture with the Trump Organisation of the US.

The Trump Tower site was originally going to be used for the Pinnacle Tower project, but Nakheel shelved the plans
