Supermarkets dominate sales
Supermarkets have started to account for the majority of food sales in the UAE for the first time, according to market research firm Nielsen.Large retailers, including supermarkets and hypermarkets, accounted for more than 50 per cent of all food sales in the UAE in the first half of 2007. Nielsen predicts that the market share of large retailers will reach 60 per cent by 2010 because of the fast rate at which they are opening new stores.'Small stores still have a significant market share because of the added service they provide and the fact that they have changed their assortment in favour of top-ups, rather than products sold once a month,' says Piyush Mathur, Nielsen's regional general manager.
