OIL & GAS: Growing ambitions
The UK's BP has a long history in Algeria. Arriving in the country during the final years of French colonialism in the mid-1950s, the company operated petrol stations and distributed oils and lubricants in the small industrial and consumer market, and in 1955 it made one of the first substantial hydrocarbons discoveries, at Edjele, just inside the Libyan border.
