Iranian president survives grenade attack

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has survived an attack on his convoy in western Iran.

An unindentified attacker threw a homemade explosive device at Ahmadinejad’s convoy as it travelled through the city of Hamedan, which is about 360 kilometres southwest of Tehran.

“This morning a hand grenade exploded next to a vehicle carrying reporters accompanying the president in Hamedan,” says local website Khabaronline. “Ahmadinejad’s car was 100 metres away and he was not hurt.”

However, Tehran-based news channel Press TV denies the attack took place.

A number of other people were wounded in the attack. Ahmadinejad later went on to give a speech at a sports stadium in the city, say local reports.

One person has been arrested in connection with the attack.
