MEED's national oil company survey: Last chance to enter

MEED is running its second annual survey of NOCs in the Middle East and North Africa.

The survey examines the performance of the region's leading NOCs across a wide range of criteria, from production, reserves replacement and downstream infrastructure development to investment in human resources, environmental protection and transparency.

It also looks at the companies' ability to deliver projects on time and to budget, and their record of prompt payment to international partners and contractors.

The survey comprises a series of short questionnaires, each dedicated to the performance of one specific NOC. It is open to anyone who has worked with any of the region's NOCs, as a contractor, supplier, advisor or in any other capacity. The performance of the Middle East's NOCs is of crucial importance to the future of global energy supply.

"The performance of the Middle East's NOCs is of crucial importance to the future of global energy supply"

NOCs control more than 80 per cent of the world's oil, while the world's five largest international oil companies between them have only three per cent.

The role of NOCs is becoming ever greater as resources continue to dwindle in the developed world. In the years ahead, NOCs are expected to account for the vast majority of the world's incremental oil and gas production.

NOCs in the Middle East and North Africa are central to this challenge. The region accounts for about two-thirds of the world's proven oil reserves and more than 40 per cent of its gas. Eight of the 12 members of the international oil cartel Opec come from the region.

The Gulf alone boasts the world's five largest national crude reserves.

Last year's survey was topped by Saudi Aramco, which scored highly across the board and particularly impressed for its commercial performance and technology development.

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and Qatar Petroleum were ranked equal second, with Algeria's Sonatrach and Petroleum Development Oman making up the top five.

First published in 1957, MEED provides Middle East business intelligence and is read in 78 countries.
