Riyadh registers interest in Rabigh power plant

Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) is receiving expressions of interest in the project to build an independent power plant (IPP) at Rabigh.

A request for qualifications is due to be issued by the end of January.

"There has been very high interest from across the market," a source close to the project tells MEED, although he declines to say how many companies are expressing interest.

In a region dominated by independent projects which include both a power and water component, the planned 1,200MW project is unusual for having power generation only. It is also SEC's first IPP. The company is planning two more IPPs in Riyadh and Al-Qurraya.
