2008 hospitality revenue up
Hospitality revenue in the GUlf has increased over the first nine months of 2008, but a downturn is expected in the coming months. Abu Dhabi reported a 39.9% change in revenue per room in the first nine months of the year, followed by Oman with 32.9% and Saudi Arabia with 23.1% while Dubai grew 4.7%, according to Deloitte. -
40% of households in Jordan have PCs
The number of Jordanian households that have PCs and are connected to the Internet increased by around 7% in 2008, reported Jordan Times, citing a survey by the kingdom's Department of Statistics. About two-fifth of Jordanian families have PCs in 2008, the survey found, compared with about one-third in 2007. About 22% of Jordanian households are connected to the Internet in 2008, compared with about 16% in 2007. -
A third of tourism projects in UAE may be cancelled
One-third of the tourism projects being planned in the UAE will be cancelled because of the increasing difficulty of financing these projects, reported The National, citing Alex Kyriakidis, the global managing partner of tourism, hospitality and leisure at Deloitte. Abu Dhabi airports to run new venture
The Abu Dhabi Airport Company (Adac) has begun to manage and run a new airport on Sir Bani Yas Island, off the coast of Abu Dhabi, with domestic flights expected to begin this month. The terminal was built by the Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC). Agility wins $932m US military contract
Agility, the Middle East's largest storage and logistics company, has won a contract worth up to $932m to provide repair parts for communications and electronics equipment to the US military, Bloomberg has reported. The contract, awarded by the Defense Supply Center Columbus, is for four years with two additional two-year options. A unit of Agility will provide the communications and electronics equipment at the Tobyhanna Army Depot in Pennsylvania. -

Air India Express flights to Mumbai on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays will depart Doha at 17.45 and arrive in Mumbai at 23.10 from January 12, 2009. Dubai police will soon install radars every two kilometres on the roads to deter speeding and reckless motorists, a senior police official told Gulf News. Lieutenant Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Acting Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said the police will also use mobile radars to deter speeding and reckless motorists and protect road users. He said the department has installed 90 new digital radars on several internal roads and highways in Dubai. -
Dubai police use breathalysers
Dubai police are now using breathalysers for the first time to test motorists suspected of drinking and driving, reported 7DAYS. The machines have been introduced at a number of stations across the city and police may use them to conduct random tests on drivers. Stiffer penalites now exist for anyone prosecuted for drunk driving, with the maximum sentence being three years in jail and a fine of Dhs200,000, the daily reported. -

Some hotels in Dubai's central business district are paying taxi drivers Dhs100 ($27) to Dhs150 as commission for bringing in clients, reported The National. A new report issued yesterday by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecast that airlines in the Middle East will lose $200m in 2009 as demand falls for air travel. The Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two organisations will mean that RMMI will provide five million tons per annum of low sulphur thermal coal to manage the energy needs of the aluminium smelter and manage the logistics. Work begins on Qatar-Bahrain causeway
