Rule enforcement vital to save energy in Saudi Arabia

Private sector called on to do more to reduce waste in the kingdom

Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister for Electricity Saleh Alawaji told the MEED Saudi Green Buildings Forum 2011 in Riyadh this morning that enforcing energy-saving policies is now the key issue for all those wishing to reduce energy waste in the kingdom.

“The decision makers are very willing to take decisions to benefit the nation,” Alawaji said. “In my opinion, implementation and enforcement are the major challenges.”

“The building code is already in place,” Alawaji said. “Now it is supposed to be enforced. But I don’t know to what extent we have already moved in implementation. I am doubtful whether it has been enforced.”

Alawaji called on business to do more. “One of the major issue is the contribution of the private sector,” Alawaji. “I think if we leave the government to make decisions and business keep away, we shall not achieve our goals. Each party has responsibility to make the right decision at the right time to help us to deliver the objectives.”
