Ban on reporting on released FIS leaders
Algiers on 3 July requested that all foreign correspondents sent to Algeria especially to cover the release of two leaders of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) leave the country. The government also barred resident journalists from covering the story. Speculation among analysts is that the ban was issued ahead of Friday prayers to prevent any reporting of a potential decision by Abbassi Madani or Ali Belhadj to attend services, which they have been forbidden to do.
