Berber language accepted in education system

President Bouteflika on 31 July announced that the Berber language would be used in the educational system, meeting one of the key demands of the minority. Tamazight will from now on be included and promoted in schools and colleges. It was recognised as a national language in 2002 in the face of Berber unrest but Bouteflika said that recognition as an official language would necessitate a change in the constitution.
