Bouteflika puts forward reconciliation plan
Algerian President Bouteflika presented a new charter for peace and national reconciliation on 14 August. The document offers amnesty to Islamist militants who surrendered to the authorities before January 2000, but excludes those involved in mass killings, rape and attacks on public targets.
