European hostages freed
The 14 European tourists taken hostage in the Sahara earlier this year have been released, a Mali government spokesman announced on 18 August. The news was later confirmed by the German Foreign Ministry. The 14 - nine from Germany, four from Switzerland and one from the Netherlands - were captured while exploring the southern Algerian desert some six months ago. Seventeen others were rescued by the Algerian army in May, while one German women is reported to have died from heatstroke. ...
