Rumsfeld visits Algiers
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld visited Algiers on 12 February during a three-day tour of Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. During the trip, Rumsfeld met President Bouteflika, who in 2001 became the first Algerian leader to visit the White House. Rumsfeld's visit was designed to boost defence ties between the countries and to lend support to Algeria's attempts to crack down on local extremism.
