Two jailed FIS leaders freed
Two jailed leaders of the now-banned Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) were released on 2 July, creating anxiety among some in the government that the two could spark a resurgence of Islamist activity ahead of the 2004 presidential election. Party chief Abassi Madani, who had been under house arrest, and his deputy Ali Belhadj, who was being held at a military prison, were both jailed in 1992 just before the cancellation of the 1991-92 elections which the FIS was poised to win.
