US to provide military aid to Algeria
The US is to provide military aid to Algeria to help the government combat Islamic militants operating in the country. No such aid programme has been offered to Algeria since before the 1992 election, which was cancelled after apparent victory for the Islamic Salvation Front. The only form of military co-operation has been US training and education of Algerian officers.
