Iran and Armenia to sign railway agreement

The railway will run between Jolfa and the Armenian border

Iran and Armenia are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding in the next three months to start building railway lines to connect the two countries.

The two countries are planning to build a 460-kilometre railway that will run from Jolfa in the north of the country to the border with Armenia.

The railway is planned to transport passengers and cargo between Iran, Armenia, the Gulf states and other countries in the Economic Cooperation Organisation (Eco), says the Armenia ambassador to Iran Grigor Arakelyan.

The Eco is already carrying out feasibility studies for several railways that will pass through Iran (MEED 6:3:11).
