Doha-based Aamal Company has set up a joint venture with Argentinian transport infrastructure company Cometrans Group to compete for work on Qatar’s planned national railway network.

The new joint venture, Cometrans Qatar, will also consider working on the development and operation of the planned GCC railway network and create an assembly plant for buses and industrial vehicles, according to an Aamal statement.

The Qatar Railway Development Company has completed preliminary designs for a national rail system and is scheduled to issue a tender for detailed designs later in 2010.

The planned rail network involves an east coast rail link, a high-speed line between the planned new international airport and Doha city centre, a light rail network at Lusail and a metro system for Doha.

Contracts for the multi-billion-dollar GCC rail project are scheduled to be awarded by the end of 2010.
