Saipem and Samsung Engineering order power and automation equipment for gas processing plant

ABB has received an order for power distribution and automation equipment to be installed in the gas processing plant at the Shah project in Abu Dhabi.

The Swiss technology company will supply low voltage switchgear, motor control units and variable frequency drives to Italy’s Saipem and South Korea’s Samsung Engineering, who won the construction package for the plant earlier this year.

The plant will extract the sulphur from the Shah field’s gas, processing one billion cubic feet a day (cf/d) of sour gas into 500 million cf/d of useable gas.

The Shah gas project has been prioritised by Abu Dhabi, as the emirate is facing increasing demand from power generation and petrochemical production. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) is developing the field with US company Occidental, after US hydrocarbon major ConocoPhillips pulled out of the deal in 2010.
