Samsung C&T wins $270m contract
Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC) has awarded a contract to South Korea’s Samsung C&T Engineering & Construction Group for the construction of a deep-tunnel sewerage system.
The contract, worth AED990m ($270m), covers the construction of a 16-kilometre network, four operating shafts and three access shafts. Samsung C&T is to design and build the project by 2014.
The tunnel will have a diameter of 4 metres and will run from Abu Dhabi Island to the Mussafah area.
The project is part of a larger 41km programme of deep-tunnel sewers from Abu Dhabi island to Al-Wathba. There are three tunnel packages on the Strategic Tunnel Enhance Programme (Step).
Two similar contracts have already been awarded for the programme – both to Italy’s Impregilo.
Impregilo won the AED891m contract to build the middle section of the 40km-long tunnel from Mussafah to Mafraq in the first week of September 2009.
It then won the contract for 10-kilometre long tunnel between Mafraq and Al-Wathba in December 2010. The contract was worth AED785m.
