Abu Dhabi convention centre progresses

11 January 2002

The local Readymix Abu Dhabi has been awarded the second package on the Abu Dhabi convention centre project. Three companies submitted bids by the end-October deadline for package 2, which covers setting up a concrete batch plant on site with a capacity of about 110 cubic metres an hour. The client has also issued package 7, the second superstructure contract, for bid. In total, there are 16 bid packages on the estimated AED 1,200 million-1,500 million ($327 million-408 million) development (MEED 2:11:01).

Package 7 covers the superstructure works for the east and west hotels. Prequalified companies have until 24 January to price the contract. For package 6, covering the palace superstructure works, the bid deadline has been extended to 19 January (MEED 21:12:01).

The superstructure packages will be followed by the tendering of packages 9 and 10, covering the general construction works for the palace, the conference centre and the hotels.

In late October, the local Arab Technical Construction Company (Arabtec) was awarded package 1 for an estimated AED 43 million ($11.7 million). The enabling facilities contract includes the construction of temporary accommodation for workers, temporary offices for the architect and project manager, a laydown area and related works.

The Abu Dhabi government centre is planned to host the GCC summit in late 2004. The UK's WAT&G is the project architect and the US' Turner International the project manager (MEED 3:8:01).
