Abu Dhabi firm buys stake in Italian toll road operator

31 December 2008
Abu Dhabi-based Aabar Investment has bought a 3.3 per cent stake in Italian toll-road firm Atlantia for $355m.

Atlantia is the largest concessionaire on the Italian highway network.

Aabar bought the stake through its wholly-owned company Sopela Beteiligungsverwaltungs from Corporate Partecipazioni, a subsidiary of UniCredit Corporate Banking.

There are currently no toll roads in Abu Dhabi. A major new highway is planned from Mafraq to the Abu Dhabi border at Ghweifat by the Department of Transport, in partnership with the private sector, but it does not plan to use tolls to raise revenues (MEED 31:10:08).
