Five-star hotel will be built on Sowwah island

Abu Dhabi government-owned investment firm Mubadala Development Company has received bids from companies for the contract to build the Four Seasons hotel on Sowwah island.

Mubadala received bids from at least eight contractors on 31 March for the main construction package on the proposed hotel.

The bidders include:

  • Arabian Construction Company (ACC) (local/Lebanon)
  • Arabtec Construction (local)
  • Al-Futtaim Carillion (local/UK)
  • Al-Habtoor Leighton Group(local/Australia)/Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East) (South Africa)
  • Brookfield Multiplex (Australia)
  • Interbeton (Netherlands)
  • Six Construct Abu Dhabi (local/Belgium)
  • Samsung Corporation (South Korea)

The planned five-star hotel will be a 144-metre high tower, with a gross floor area of about 100,000 square metres.

The 200-room hotel will contain restaurants, a swimming pool, spa, gym and conference centre. The development will also include 124 apartments and a 6,000 sq m retail area. In addition, the hotel will have 16,000 sq m of car parking space. The estimated duration of the construction work is 24 months.

Mubadala is also responsible for the development of the rest of Sowwah Island, located between Reem island and the port area of Abu Dhabi island.

It is also developing the Rosewood hotel on the island. In January last year, ACC was awarded an estimated AED800m ($218m) contract to build the hotel.

The project covers the construction of a five-star hotel with 189 rooms and 139 serviced apartments, a retail area, basement parking and other facilities including a swimming pool, health club and spa. The total built-up area is about 100,000 sq m (MEED 8:1:10).

Mubadala is also developing the estimated AED4.7bn Cleveland Clinic on Sowwah Island. A joint venture of Six Construct and Samsung was awarded the main construction package in March 2010 (MEED 8:3:10).

When complete, Cleveland Clinic will be a 364-bed, 220,000-sq m hospital with parking spaces for 3,200 cars.

Work is already under way on other parts of the island. Oger Abu Dhabi has been building the estimated AED4bn Sowwah Square development since mid-2007 and will be handing the project over to the client by the end of April. The development is expected to open for business in early 2012.
