Abu Dhabi government-owned Mubadala Development Company has received bids for a contract to build a landmark bridge between Abu Dhabi island and Sowwah Island.

It will be known as bridge number 4 and has been designed as a cable-stayed bridge with the bridge deck suspended from a 50-metre-high arch.

According to sources involved, there are at least five contractors that have submitted bids for the construction deal. These include:

  •       The local Al-Naboodah Construction Group
  •       Germany’s Ed Zueblin
  •       Japan’s Taisei Corporation
  •       South Korea’s Samsung Corporation

The structural engineer on the project is UK-based Atkins.

Al-Naboodah is working on the infrastructure for Sowwah Island that includes four bridges and 5 kilometres of flyovers that will link the island with Abu Dhabi mainland and Reem Island.

Mubadala recently awarded the local/UK Al-Futtaim Carillion a contract to design and build the New York University Abu Dhabi’s main campus on Saadiyat Island.

The campus will be built at Saadiyat Island’s cultural district. It will have lecture theatres, IT buildings, a library, laboratories, accommodation and sports facilities.

Construction work is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year, with the estimated completion date set as the first quarter of 2014 (MEED 27:4:10).
