Abu Dhabi second runway goes for bid

The Works Department has issued the long-awaited tender for the second runway project at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Contractors have until late July to submit bids for the contract (MEED 18:4:03).

Estimated to be worth $110 million, it will cover the construction of a 4,100-metre-long runway, parallel and link taxiways, navigational facilities and associated works. Construction will take about 30 months.

Ten groups of companies are prequalified to bid for the contract. They are: Cyprus' Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P - Overseas); Germany's Hochtief, with Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC); South Korea's Daewoo Engineering & Construction; Germany's Bilfinger & Berger; Strabag, also of Germany; the UK's Balfour Beatty; the local Al-Jaber Transport & General Contracting Establishment with South Africa's Grinekar-LTA; Al-Naboodah Contracting Company, also local; the local Al-Masood Contracting, with the UK's Mowlem International; and Saudi Binladin Group. The UK's Halcrow Groupis the consultant (MEED 14:9:01).

The new runway is part of the $600 million scheme to expand the airport. Bids for the main terminal package are now due to be submitted by 16 June.

The package covers the construction of a two-storey building, 11 bays, six remote bays and a 7,000-square-metre shopping area.

The consultant for the terminal package is France's Aeroports de Paris (MEED 14:3:03).
