Abu Dhabi still to make power and water plant decision

Adnoc will use most of the power capacity produced by new project

Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) is awaiting approval for its next independent water and power project (IWPP). According to Adwea’s chief executive officer, Abdulla Saif al-Nuaimi, the location and size of the emirate’s next IWPP is yet to be determined.

The project will include both power and water capacity. “It will be an IWPP, because there is also growth on the water side,” says Al-Nuaimi. A site at Mirfa has been tipped as the most likely location for Abu Dhabi’s next IWPP after a project at Taweelah became increasingly unlikely.

Feedstock access and power consumption will determine the location and capacity of the new project. In this instance, “Most of the power will be going to Adnoc,” says al-Nuaimi. The new project is scheduled to come online in 2015.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s most recently financed independent power project (IPP), Shuweihat S3, is under construction and “work is ahead of schedule”, says Al-Nuaimi.
