Abu Dhabi tenders Capital City District consultancy role

11 March 2010

Urban Planning Council is developing 49 square-kilometre federal capital

Abu Dhabi’s Urban Planning Council (UPC) has invited firms to submit bids by the end of March for the contract to provide design and construction supervision services for the infrastructure on its Capital City District development.

The prospective bidders include:

  • Atkins (UK)
  • Halcrow (UK)
  • Mott Macdonald (UK)
  • Parsons International (US)

The infrastructure includes metro lines, highways and local roads. The other infrastructure work covers the wastewater network, district cooling systems and gas lines.

The contract to provide project management services on Capital City District was awarded to US-based Aecom in December last year (MEED 3:12:09).

The 49-square-kilometre Capital City District is one of the largest real estate projects in Abu Dhabi. It will be built close to Khalifa City, between Abu Dhabi International airport and Mohammed bin Zayed City.

The development will include government and commercial office buildings, residential tower blocks and low-density neighbourhoods for UAE nationals.

When complete, about 370,000 people will live in the district, which will serve as a downtown area for the city of Abu Dhabi.

A Federal Precinct will be at the centre of the project and will be the national seat of government for the UAE.

Seven major road boulevards symbolising the seven emirates will lead into the precinct.

The UPC wants to line the boulevards with public monuments, parks and other landmark buildings. One of the largest buildings will be a new football stadium, which is being built by Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Development Company. Contractors have been invited to bid by 24 May for the estimated $1bn design and construction contract (MEED 9:2:10).
