Acwa Power to develop CSP plant in South Africa

16 July 2018
Solar plant will contain storage technology to allow the production of electricity during peak evening periods

Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power has signed an agreement with South Africa’s Central Energy Fund to develop a 100MW concentrated solar power (CSP) project in the Northern Cape Province of the African country.

Construction work on the Redstone CSP plant will begin before the end of 2018. The plant will contain energy storage technology to enable it to store energy for up to 12 hours, allowing it to produce electricity overnight.

The plant will have the capacity to supply electricity to 210,000 homes.

The Redstone project will be the second CSP solar plant that Acwa Power has developed in the Northern Cape area of South Africa.

The developer previously constructed the 50MW Bokpoort CSP project, which contains a thermal storage capacity of up to 9.3 hours.
