The US' Bechtel has awarded nine new reconstruction subcontracts under its $680 million US Agency for International Development (USAID) capital construction contract. Six of the contracts were for the rehabilitation of schools in Kirkuk and Mosul. All the awards went to local contractors.

The new contracts take the total number of contracts awarded by Bechtel since 25 April to 133. According to USAID, Bechtel has hired 69 Iraqi subcontractors, employing 27,000 people, on subcontracts totaling $47.4 million - about 44 per cent of the total value of subcontracts awarded so far.
