The Finance Ministry issued in late December the advisory tender for the Sohar independent water and power project (IWPP). Teams of consultants have been given until 20 January to bid for the contract. The IWPP will meet the power and water requirements of new industry in the Sohar industrial area (MEED 20:12:02).
The mandate covers the preparation of a detailed strategy report; management of the tendering and evaluation process; and the completion of the final project agreements.
The project calls for the development of a 400-500-MW plant with a desalination capacity of between 20 million-40 million gallons a day. Initial studies for the desalination element of the scheme have been prepared by the UK's Mott MacDonald.
